can't hear voice with subs on my surround sound

hi all,
i just had the documentry klitschko with subs, i'm not sure how this works, i downloaded both the file AVI and subtitles and just played the movie, from my laptop i could hear the voices and read the subs but i plug into surround sound and can't hear the voice, i plug in their all the time and no probs
so what can it be
