VLC/Script 5.3 and Ubuntu/Mint

Can someone please tell me how to get streaming (not downloading) to work on Ubuntu/Mint/etc. using VLC and GreaseMonkey script 5.3?
It just won't stream for me; instead, Firefox always prompts with "open with Firefox" or "save file" — the former absolutely useless and the latter NOT streaming.
Cheers!

Have you followed the multimedia howto on the ubuntu forums?
Now I've got a link... What the hell do I do with it?

You bet. Everything used to work fine with GStreamer codecs and the Gecko Mplayer plugin for Firefox. Now, with all this new VLC streaming business and the new Grease Monkey script, I can't stream anymore because VLC won't open when I click the link. Firefox is prompted to open the video instead. And then another tab opens and Firefox is prompted to open the video. Ad infinitum.

You'll have to associate the filetype with VLC.
