For Canadian users of this site........

Mostly praise goes here. And anything icefilms or scene related that doesn't fit anywhere else. NO REQUESTS. NO TECHNICAL ISSUES. NO ideas or feature requests.

For Canadian users of this site........

Post#1 » Sat Jul 23, 2016 9:24 am

I'm about a year late in bringing this up, but thanks to that prick Stephen Harper caving in to the MPAA etc., We face the same predicament that our brothers and sisters have in Australia and the UK.
{while this relates to torrents it also applies to direct downloaders} and while we did get rid of that bastard you should read this:

Code: Select all

http://www.cbc.ca/radio/day6/episode-228-cameras-in-the-courtoom-bruce-dickinson-police-killings-and-illegal-download-notices-1.3026364/should-you-pay-if-you-get-an-illegal-download-notice-1.3026370

OR do a general search like this:

Code: Select all

https://www.google.ca/search?q=downloading+torrents+in+Canada&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gfe_rd=cr&ei=xmWTV_L2OoON8Qe38Zv4CA

First torrents, then direct downloaders, like you, looking for free files, but like in UK and Australia [and not knowing what Justin T. is going to do] it could lead to full ISP blocking of even the link sites. aka Icefilms.
The weak link [pun] in all this is your I.P. address, so I urge you all to start learning to hide your tracks, it is fairly easy, the simplest is to start paying for an unrestricted downloader service, any outfit with 'Debrid' in their name or do a search and pick the one you like, example: {and if you're paranoid use duckduckgo, not google}

Code: Select all

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=unrestricted+downloaders&t=ffsb&ia=web

I've been doing this for some time, as an alternative to using VPNs, The cost for me is €16 or always less than $25 CDN for six months service but I always top up before expiry any how. They're all easy to use and have in the last few years incorporated torrent tools, so you don't have to torrent directly, leech to one of their servers, then d/l from there.

If full ISP blocking does come to Canada, you should at least get familiar with the Tor Browser, it has both on-board and portable versions, though the Tor button for Firefox is no longer supported, as FF keeps changing too fast for the Tor volunteers to keep up. I know I will start familiarising myself with it as soon as I leave this post. Add to that re-familiarising myself with the dark web, which one can use with the Tor Browser / .onion addresses.
If you don't think it will happen here, you're fooling yourself, just this past Wednesday through Friday they raided Kickass Torrents, internationally, including the Canadian host sites/server farms.

Code: Select all

What pisses me off was the honouring of a mainly U.S. warrant, sticking their noses in other people's business, I expected that of Poland, but not Canadian authorities.
Last but not least, VPN networks, both free and pay-for, as previously discussed in other threads, again what you choose is personal choice but we're going to have to pay something sooner or later.
Though don't get too paranoid, much of what Google/Bing and Yahoo do is to simply build a profile to sell you stuff you don't want, but you knew that already, didn't you?

Big Fat EDIT: popped over and joined KAT's community board while they rebuild.

Code: Select all

Well, there is a weak spot in all the above.
From the Tor site:

Code: Select all

Torrent file-sharing applications have been observed to ignore proxy settings and make direct connections even when they are told to use Tor. Even if your torrent application connects only through Tor, you will often send out your real IP address in the tracker GET request, because that's how torrents work. Not only do you  de-anonymize your torrent traffic and your other simultaneous Tor web traffic this way, you also slow down the entire Tor network for everyone else.

The above applies doubly if you're a seeder, because you double expose yourself to tracking because of direct connections and simultaneous upstream of the torrent. If you do the fad of just streaming only, you lay yourself open during that TV show or movie you're getting if its not legit like Netflix or Shomi, so better to be a file grabber.
The best way I see around this quandary, whether you torrent or direct download using links provided is to use one of those unrestricted downloading services. Even though it is considered rude not to seed. Those that do the uploading
like DIMENSION, SVA, Killers etc. are more sophisticated and savvy than you or I and then the weak spot is when a file sharing service gets knocked down. {aka MegaUpload}

Do you direct connect to the file sharing sites?
So far only Teksavvy has caved in to notices, but Rogers and Shaw also track connections.

Code: Select all

https://www.reddit.com/r/torrents/comments/4051gl/torrenting_in_canada/

Remember, Ice only gives you the info, it is the hosters that you draw from that your ISP will add
2+2=4 and nail you, but the blocking experienced in Australia and the UK may come to Canada, at least play with the Tor browser and see how it changes your I.P. address. Then you may want to port over certain settings to it for downloading/streaming, though users are warned that Tor may be slower than your actual connection.
