With regard to the NSA, telecoms and ISPs recording and analyzing the phone calls, emails and web traffic of
all American citizens, the purpose is to protect you from Citizens that may be engaging in un-American activities. These activities include Terrorism,
No one is safe. Please read the tutorial in my sig line about protecting your online privacy.
There are millions of Americans that download questionable content every day.
If a lawyer can threaten you for $150k and settle for 3k, sharing 1k with the MPAA for a single download link that you facilitated where is the most profit for the MPAA?
It's not going to be for online or local movie rentals, theater ticket sales, or DVD sales, it's going to be for prosecuting down-loaders, up-loaders and link sharers in civil court.
So people downloading "copyrighted" material represents a HUGE potential revenue stream,
bigger than any they presently have or have ever had. Possibly trillions of dollars.
Don't you think that the MPAA and congress already know this?
The copyright trolls certainly know this.
The government wins in collecting fines, the Attorneys win in collecting costs and the MPAA will win in collecting judgements.
We all complain about big business running this country and Congress, but the biggest business of all
in this country is the Law Business next to pharmaceuticals.
The MPAA and lawyers are waiting patiently for bills in Congress they've paid for to pass in their favor that legalize the illegal activity they are already pursuing, such as tracking your online activity.
Congress already passed laws to protect Telecoms/ISPs from being sued for sharing all of your private communications with the government (NSA) without a wiretap order being reviewed by a local judge, that's why the EFF is fighting to have this activity declared unconstitutional, which it is!
You don't think that the US government can illegally seize a link sharing server and prosecute the individuals involved, well look at what is happening to the Ninxx folks. And if the admins keep ip logs and are not savvy enough to use https to encrypt every web transaction with the site, then every web transaction with this site can be intercepted and traced.
So, should you cower in fear and run away. Yes. If you are wise and small. But if you feel as I do, that my civil liberties have been gutted by paid-off cowards in Congress, then you will take the steps outlined in the tutorial, and fight back to your last breath by sharing every element of content that you can find on the main site.
We would also encourage this sites owners to embrace the basic principles of web security and implement https encryption to hamper unwarranted interception of web traffic to and from this site and to create a truly secure forum for those wishing to share links to content for the main site. Further we encourage them to create a strong privacy statement which protects those who do contribute, or facilitate the movement of content to the main site.
Change your IP address before you post links to a forum by using a VPN, okay?
-edited for tone and content.
sorry for the rant.
