i'm faily new to icefilms and think its awsome but over the last few days i have not been able to connect to the main site or use the icefilms plugin in xbmc, i have been setting up this plugin in xbmc http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=98210
and since then i cannot connect to anything but the forum so i was wondering if my ip has been blocked as maybe the plugin for xbmc might make to many connections? i'm not sure.

Virgin Media.

Run a trace route. It will tell you if you are blocked.

yeah it looks like that thing is capable of hitting our server thousands of times in a day. and if u multiply that across lots of users, then there is def a prob.

Its Open Source some one more adept at code needs to look at this. But I will bet Money,Marbles or Chalk it is Targeted. To not just Ice but any sight Like it. Follow the money look at who owns it. I will see if I have any Magic Left and start in on it but it has been 5 yrs since any Code Work.

First of all i never endorsed this http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?t=98210 , and while it is cool, it does seem kind of server raping: It scrapes the whole sites video list in one go! Dumb, dumb, dumb....
i love icefilms and would never want to see its speed impaired, and it saddens me to see someone create a less bandwidth-friendly scraper than mine, and base it on my code !!!

Unfortunately, the problem with open source is that once the genie is out of the bottle (so to speak) it is impossible to get it back in. Whether the author now deletes this project etc. someone else will likely create a new thread for it and take over maintaining it.

A possible solution to your bandwidth woes might be an API?
This would save you a ton of bandwidth, considering that the data XBMC needs is about a 1/16th of the stuff in the html it scrapes.
I would be willing to let you know what you would need to put in the API to save your bandwidth, and you could still put captcha in the API to keep out bots.

just a helpful hint, i'm not sure you'd be able to ban XBMC from icefilms. considering that XBMC addon coders have cracked Hulu several times over, it would be a bit of a struggle. if i refused to crack icefilms anti-xbmc measures, someone else would step up and do it anyway.
would probably be more sustainable to implement an API.

Thank you for sharing that info. Earlier I asked for someone more adept than I, Seems like your the man! So write some magic That curbs the Catalog to say 10 pages a try, then have to refresh. It would seem that it would make every one happy. As it would curb the Bandwidth Hogging and keep fewer users from getting blocked. And yes there is a way to curb xbmc but always hate hobbling such Cool Tools. A long time ago I cooked up a Spinning Cookie 1-2-3-1-2-1-1-0 Stupid Easy. If You Aren't Buying Get out of the store.

XBMC is the best interface to run an HTPC right on your TV. People using anarchintosh's plug-in the normal way are actually pulling less resources than person pulling the content in via a normal HTML browser. It just gets icefilm's awesome content where I actually want it - on my TV accesible from my remote.

Its the other add-on that tries to scrape the entire site for every video on the site that causes the problem.

XBMC scrapes your local files so you have nice art for all your favorite movies on your own hard drive but its ridiculous to set your XBMC to scrape every video on a site the size of icefilms preemptively. Its just dumb to make your TV computer do that much work for content you might not even try to watch and its hell on servers.

But by default anarchitosh's plug-in just pulls simple text indexes of icefilm's content - very low impact. Thats how I use it and I'm a huge fan of the plug-in and ice films. Its how I watch icefilms stuff every night.

Please, please don't try to block everyone who uses XBMC just to get a few idiots trying to scrape the entire internet for video cover art.

As anarchintosh pointed out its this other plug-in, the one that catalog's the whole site in one go to preemptively pull down cover art that is the problem. Not your average XBMC icefilms user. The plug-in in this other thread.

Are you having problems Being Blocked? I looked at the other plugin and Plain Greed will get busted every time. For what it does nobody needs that much info! So keep the 25 page Ice, Or what ever this guy needs his seems pretty Benign as far as usage but it will allow us to send a message to the Greedy Ones.
