When Lem says something is bad then I'll believe it, but until then.........skynet will be watching me i guess......*hmmmmm* i wonder if my head will be grabbed by a large hand reaching out from my screen and then ill be dragged into the "net" which is really another universe under control of the evil yellow lantern corps, and then ill be brainwashed and given a yellow power ring to fight the power rangers who morph into dragon prime, a fire breathing semi truck, and then ill be tasked to destroy the autobots with the help of Sonny and Crockett who were also brainwashed, and then teaming up with the pikies who love dags........................................................................

IQSisShady wrote:Already had greasemonkey for firefox, installed the IQS script into it, loved it at first for the auto-captcha. Then I realized the script was running on EVERY website I visted. If you notice the script runs on http://* which is the wildcard for "every webpage"!
This is incredibly shady and is either very bad coding or stinks of nefarious use. Please consider changing this or not "phas[ing] out" method 3 (the red box). I don't trust this script.

*edit* in greasemonkey under "manage user scripts" i tried changing the "included pages" from http://* to http://icefilms.info but then the script ceased to function.

u only think its shady cuz ur not educated enough to understand it.

  • IQS is written in unencrypted, uncompressed, unobfuscated javascript which means it is totally OPEN SOURCE and you can read it every day, all day until you feel safe.
  • Javascript is also limited by security features which prevent it from accessing files on your local computer, so I doubt it could do much (if any) harm. It also has cross-domain security, which prevent it from accessing websites on any domain other than the current domain.
  • Other javascript code already runs in your browser when you visit ICE and millions of other websites whether you realize it or not. All this javascript code can be (and is) updated and changed without your notice, and then runs in your browser without your permission. In this respect IQS is more secure because it requires your permission.

Why http://*?
We decided this for simplicity. Rather than requiring everyone to manually update their scripts to get new page includes (or manually update their includes) we did what was simplest for the user: no manual updates ever. As new features are added, they'll just work. Furthermore it ONLY runs on http:// sites, not https://, not ftp://, or any other crazy protocol u might be using.

as brew suggested, you can set your own page includes to something like:
http://www.megaupload.com/*
http://megaupload.com/*
http://www.megaporn.com/*
http://megaporn.com/*
http://www.icefilms.info/*
http://icefilms.info/*

...but you're just being unnecessarily paranoid. The only javascript that currently runs on non-ICE/non-mega pages is a check of the URL to see if this page is ICE or mega. You will later need to add additional include pages as we add additional functionality to the script. But whatever makes u happy dude. just dont try to get others paranoid along with you. we've got enough nonsense in the world.

Thanks so much for your support, everyone. Just wanted to say that Lem’s idea of dragging and dropping the .js file into an open Firefox window worked for me (it hadn’t worked by just installing it from the mirror on the main site, and I was a bit short on ideas). Thank you!

i haven't removed mega's ads because I still want mega to make money so that they will continue to provide their great service. Occasionally there is an annoying ad, but for the most part they are unobtrusive.
